Backing Up Photos – A True Story

February 6, 2018Backing Up Photos, Photo books, Photography Tips, UncategorizedVanessa

We all know we should be backing up, but are you?

Allow me to motivate you… (you can thank me later).

A close friend of mine recently experienced the unimaginable & faced the very real possibility of losing ALL of her family photos.  ALL OF THEM. 10 years of memories since their first child was born.

I can’t wrap my head around that. Not one for holding onto “things”, my photographs are the absolute exception.  I treasure them as though they’re the Crown jewels.

Many years ago, she was prompted to download a software update for her iPhone.  It caught her in a distracted moment and she commenced the download without first backing up. We all trust technology. Most of the time it serves us well, but when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong.

When the update had finished it had wiped all of her contacts, calendar appointments and (you guessed it) photos.

The levels of self flagellation, frustration and upset were only diffused by her having done a backup 6 months earlier. Luckily, not all of her photos were lost, just those from the past 6 months.

Phew! A victory for backing up.

Flash forward years later to her daughter’s 10th birthday. A very excited chat takes place planning one very special gift – a photo book telling the story of her first decade of life.  The pièce de résistance, me being a fly on the wall & snapping photos of her 10th birthday celebration for the book’s conclusion.

I get a call…

The usb stick containing all of her images had corrupted & none of the photos could be retrieved. Fortunately, the contents of the usb stick had also been saved to an external hard drive, but… (you guessed it) the files on this too had corrupted.

Enter the IT guru.  After 2 weeks on tender hooks her precious family memories were returned to her.

Bravo, another victory for backing up.

What an emotional roller coaster. Can you imagine how precious the photo book of her daughter’s first decade is after going through all of this?!

My girlfriend now regularly performs multiple backups.  Even more importantly, she prints her photos into beautiful books that showcase their memories, and in doing so has preserved their existence. No matter what.

Do you know that creating a photo book with albumz protects your photos forever? A copy of your photo book can be reprinted any time should the unthinkable happen.

Now that’s peace of mind!
